R.I.P.: Allen Klein
Music entrepreneur Allen Klein, blamed by many for contributing to the demise of The Beatles, has died in New York at 77 after suffering from Alzheimer's. In a career spanning five decades, Klein earned a reputation as a ruthless operator, extracting lucrative deals from labels for his clients. In the mid-1960s, he managed The Rolling Stones for five years. Later managing The Beatles, he tried and failed to secure control of copyrights on their behalf. BBC report HERE more HERE

John Lennon & The Plastic Ono Band Live In Toronto ’69 is a rare look at one of the world’s most influential popular artists at a pivotal moment in his career. Filmed on the eve of the release of the Abbey Road LP — the last Beatles album to be recorded — this is the only performance ever caught on film of John Lennon & the Plastic Ono Band. It had been three years since Lennon had performed onstage with The Beatles. Seemingly on a whim, John and wife Yoko Ono hopped on a plane with guitarist Eric Clapton, bassist Klaus Voormann and drummer Alan White to travel to the Toronto Rock ’N’ Roll Revival festival showcasing some of Lennon’s early musical heroes — among them Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and Little Richard. As it turned out, Lennon and the newly formed Plastic Ono Band played an equally significant role that night in the history of rock ’n’ roll, as it is widely believed this concert foreshadowed the official end of The Beatles. Except she is Lucy Vodden — the girl who was the inspiration for the Beatles' 1967 psychedelic classic "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" — and he is Julian Lennon, the musician son of John Lennon. Julian Lennon denies he’ll perform with his half-brother, Sean. The erroneous story was first reported by Fox News, who claimed John’s sons would perform at a UN gala on February 26th. Julian wrote on his MySpace blog: “Hi Folks, sorry to say, but the news today about Sean & I playing together at the UN Awards, came directly out of [Fox News writer] Roger Friedman’s Ass! DO they ever tell the truth at FOX?”
A new John Lennon exhibition will include the clothes he was wearing on the night he was shot dead - still soaked in his dried blood. His widow Yoko Ono received a paper bag containing the bloody clothes from the medical examiner in December 1980, when the former Beatle was gunned down in New York City aged 40. The 76-year-old has left the clothes in the bag, and this is on display alongside Lennon's guitars, letters and other personal effects including Lennon's bloodied trademark spectacles he wore when he was shot. The Lennon items are part of a new exhibit that launched today at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Annex NYC. The exhibit will be on display throughout 2009. more HERE
Singer-songwriter-producer Delaney Bramlett, who penned such classic rock songs as "Let it Rain" and worked with musicians George Harrison and Eric Clapton, has died. He was 69. Bramlett died Saturday as a result of complications from gallbladder surgery. Born in Mississippi, Bramlett enjoyed a career in the music business that spanned 50 years. With his then-wife Bonnie Lynn, he created the Southern blues-rock band Delaney & Bonnie & Friends. The group opened for Blind Faith, which featured British guitarist Clapton, in 1969. He is perhaps best known for standards such as "Superstar," co-written with Leon Russell, which was recorded by Usher, Luther Vandross, Bette Midler, The Carpenters and most recently, Sonic Youth, in a version featured on the Grammy-nominated soundtrack of the movie "Juno." He co-wrote "Let it Rain" with Clapton, who also recorded it, and "Never Ending Song of Love," which was recorded by more than 100 artists including Ray Charles, George Jones, Tammy Wynette, Patty Loveless and Dwight Yoakam. During his career, he performed, co-wrote or recorded with stars such as Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, John Lennon, Dave Mason, Billy Preston, the Everly Brothers and Mac Davis. He also produced artists including Etta James and Elvin Bishop. He recently released an album, "A New Kind of Blues," on independent label Magnolia Gold Records. obit HERE official website HERE

L'Osservatore Romano, the semi-official Vatican newspaper marked the 40th anniversary of The Beatles' "White Album" with an article forgiving the late English singer John Lennon for saying four decades ago that The Beatles were more popular than Jesus and praising Lennon and the Fab Four from Liverpool. Lennon told a British newspaper in 1966 - at the height of Beatlemania - that he did not know which would die out first, Christianity or rock and roll. Paul McCartney says it's time an experimental Beatles track saw the light of day. McCartney says he wants to release "Carnival of Light," a 14-minute experimental track the Fab Four recorded in 1967 but never released. The band played the recording for an audience just once, at an electronic music festival in London. It reportedly includes distorted guitar, organ sounds, gargling and shouts of "Barcelona!" and "Are you all right?" from McCartney and John Lennon. more HERE

'Across the Universe' launched across the universe
LONDON - An intergalactic celebration of The Beatles was launched Monday with the beaming of their peace anthem "Across the Universe" into outer space. The man behind the idea, which marks the 40th anniversary of the recording of the song in 1968, is an avid Beatles fan who has persuaded U.S. space agency NASA to kick off the party and now hopes to convert alien life forms to The Beatles. the story is HERE
Yoko Ono unveiled her light tower on Videy Island in Reykjavík, Iceland, on what would have been John Lennon’s 67th birthday.
Imagine Peace Tower is the title of this latest work by Ono. The tower is composed of a beam of light emanating from a giant wishing well, which features the words “imagine peace” in 24 languages. It will be lit every year from October 9, Lennon’s birthday, to December 8, the day he died, as well as on New Year’s Eve and the first week of spring. Over half a million wishes for peace from all over the world will be put in a series of capsules placed on Videy Island around the peace tower.
