The Plastic Ono Band Revisited

John Lennon & The Plastic Ono Band Live In Toronto ’69 is a rare look at one of the world’s most influential popular artists at a pivotal moment in his career. Filmed on the eve of the release of the Abbey Road LP — the last Beatles album to be recorded — this is the only performance ever caught on film of John Lennon & the Plastic Ono Band. It had been three years since Lennon had performed onstage with The Beatles. Seemingly on a whim, John and wife Yoko Ono hopped on a plane with guitarist Eric Clapton, bassist Klaus Voormann and drummer Alan White to travel to the Toronto Rock ’N’ Roll Revival festival showcasing some of Lennon’s early musical heroes — among them Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry and Little Richard. As it turned out, Lennon and the newly formed Plastic Ono Band played an equally significant role that night in the history of rock ’n’ roll, as it is widely believed this concert foreshadowed the official end of The Beatles.

The Lennon Boys Come Together...Sort of

Julian Lennon denies he’ll perform with his half-brother, Sean. The erroneous story was first reported by Fox News, who claimed John’s sons would perform at a UN gala on February 26th. Julian wrote on his MySpace blog: “Hi Folks, sorry to say, but the news today about Sean & I playing together at the UN Awards, came directly out of [Fox News writer] Roger Friedman’s Ass! DO they ever tell the truth at FOX?”

Imagine Peace

Yoko Ono unveiled her light tower on Videy Island in Reykjavík, Iceland, on what would have been John Lennon’s 67th birthday.

Imagine Peace Tower is the title of this latest work by Ono. The tower is composed of a beam of light emanating from a giant wishing well, which features the words “imagine peace” in 24 languages. It will be lit every year from October 9, Lennon’s birthday, to December 8, the day he died, as well as on New Year’s Eve and the first week of spring. Over half a million wishes for peace from all over the world will be put in a series of capsules placed on Videy Island around the peace tower.

Among guests attending the ceremony are former Beatle Ringo Starr, George Harrison’s widow Olivia Harrison, and Sean Lennon, the son of John Lennon and Yoko Ono.
