Recycled car parts are components of a marvelous motorized vehicle that sucks human feces at 1,700 liters a minute from pit latrines in slums worldwide and transports them to treatment plants. That’s better than human beings having to bail out the pits by hand with buckets, which is commonplace among the billion-or-so poor who lack plumbing and who often empty those buckets into the nearest lake, river or sea. Pit latrines are holes in the ground a few feet deep over which the user stands or squats. In areas such as Mumbai’s Dharavi, where Slumdog Millionaire was partly set, thousands of users share a single pit.
Say a toiletty hello to the Vacutug. Powered by a small gasoline engine and rolling on salvaged secondhand car wheels and hubcaps, this adorably named four-foot-tall, 500-liter vacuum-tank-and-pump conveyance sucks fecal sludge or just plain urine lickity-split, then trundles it to a safe processing place.

Pregnant M.I.A. to perform at Grammys

M.I.A. slated to perform, give birth during Grammys
The very pregnant singer, who is up for this year's record of the year Grammy, is scheduled to deliver her little one on the same night she'll be performing at the awards ceremony. Still, M.I.A. isn't canceling her set. Should her water break on stage, a golf cart will be on hand to shuttle her out of Staples Center.
M.I.A. has been nominated in the category of record of the year for Paper Planes which became hugely popular last year after appearing on the Pineapple Express soundtrack as well as remixed versions in this years darling, Slumdog Millionaire.

Slumdog Advances Toward Oscar

At Sunday's 15th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, "Slumdog Millionaire" and Heath Ledger triumphed once again, while Sean Penn shocked with a win in the lead actor category over presumed favorite Mickey Rourke.
Coming weeks after ruling at the Golden Globes, this latest victory for 'Slumdog' solidified its status as a heavy favorite to take the Oscar for Best Picture.

Slumdog M.I.A.

One doesn't have to get deep into Danny Boyle's "Slumdog Millionaire" to sample some of the kinetic music that drives it. Close to 10 minutes into the film, there's a rush of rhythms -- the sound, perhaps, of animals scurrying around an alley.
Vocals don't cut in until around the halfway mark, but when they do, they capture someone on the run. It's the voice of worldly electronic artist M.I.A.
The soundtrack to "Slumdog Millionaire" will mark the first release on M.I.A.'s Interscope label, N.E.E.T. In 2009.
