Smile or Else...

Japanese railway workers face enforced "smile scans" every morning...
More than 500 staff at Keihin Electric Express Railway are expected to be subjected to daily face scans by "smile police" bosses.
The "smile scan" software produces a sweeping analysis of a smile based on facial characteristics, from lip curves and eye movements to wrinkles.
After scanning a face, the device produces a rating between zero to 100 depending on the estimated value of the fulfilled potential of a person's biggest smile.
For those with a below-par grin, one of an array of smile-boosting messages will op up on the computer screen ranging from "you still look too serious" to "lift up your mouth corners".

Ambassadors of Cute?

TOKYO, Japan - Ever seen an ambassador dressed from head to foot in pastel frills? How about a diplomatic envoy in a mini-skirted school uniform?
In a bid to raise its international profile, Tokyo has appointed three young women as cultural envoys because they represent Japan's long-running craze for all things cute.
Inspired by the characters in Japan's distinctive "anime" animated films and "manga" cartoon books, one of the new ambassadors dresses as a schoolgirl, another as a Victorian doll in voluminous frilly skirts.

Curse of the Colonel Lifted?

Osaka, Japan - A statue of Colonel Sanders, Kentucky Fried Chicken's founder, is displayed by Osaka city officers after it was recovered from the sludge of a river nearly a quarter century after it went missing on March 11, 2009.
The discovery made national headlines and television news because the disappearance of the statue occured in 1985 after fans of the popular local professional baseball team Hanshin Tigers threw the statue into the river after the team won their only Japan Series championship.
The lack of another championship since 1985, including two losses in the finals in 2003 and 2005, has been hence blamed on the "curse of the colonel" by fans.

Discover Fuzoku

In Pink Box, photographer Joan Sinclair takes us on a journey inside the secret world of fuzoku (commercial sex) in Japan, a world where kawaii (cute) collides with consumerism and sex.
Unrivaled in their creativity and the sheer number of choices, the clubs featured in this book offer their clientele every fantasy imaginable. Subway groping, visits to the nurse’s office, and comic book character encounters are just the beginning of the immense list of possibilities that are played out in colorful playrooms for adults where no detail is overlooked. Sinclair’s photographs capture it all...
