Gibson's wife Robyn Moore has filed for divorce from the Oscar-winning "Braveheart" star citing irreconcilable differences.
Moore, 52, is the mother of Gibson's seven children. Only the youngest, Thomas, who turns 10 Tuesday, remains a minor.
Rarely seen in public, Moore is a fundamentalist Catholic and former dental nurse who met the "Mad Max" star in Australia. She joined him in a joint statement asking to be left alone.

Armageddon's Near Miss

Sky-watchers in Asia, Australia, and the Pacific islands welcomed a surprise guest Monday: an asteroid that passed just 41,010 miles (66,000 kilometers) above Earth.
Discovered only days ago, asteroid 2009 DD45 zipped between our planet and the moon at 13:44 universal time (8:44 a.m. ET). The asteroid was moving at about 12 miles (20 kilometers) a second when it was closest to Earth.

More Mysterious Mass Whale Beaching

Australian authorities are racing to save dozens of pilot whales and a small pod of dolphins beached on an island.
The mammals have stranded themselves on King Island, in the Bass Strait between the mainland and the southern state of Tasmania.
Reports say about 140 out of nearly 200 whales have already died.
More than 400 whales have died in Tasmanian waters in recent months, in a phenomenon for which scientists still have no definitive explanation.
The 194 pilot whales and half a dozen bottlenose dolphins became stranded on Naracoopa Beach on King Island on Sunday evening.
