Seaman Comes Across Big Missiles
PINELLAS COUNTY, Florida (June 9, 2009)— Rodney Solomon was hoping for fish, but instead reeled in a pair of air-to-air missiles, and one of them was no dud.
In fact, after Solomon hooked the second missile, authorities shut off the area in which he was fishing on Florida’s gulf coast because of concerns the missile could explode.
The first missile he reeled in he kept as a souvenir. But the second one, which he hooked a few days later at Maderia Beach, was still beeping...although there are conflicting stories.
Local authorities called in the bomb squad from MacDill Air Force Base. The experts determined the missile was live and even more dangerous because the exposure to salt water had corroded it. Eventually it was dismantled and taken to the Air Force base for analysis.
Solomon caught it about 30 miles of a missile testing area, but it’s not clear whether that’s where it came from.
