R.I.P.: Mark 'The Bird' Fidrych
'The Bird' was one of a kind in Tigers history
Mark Fidrych, the free-spirited and endearing right-hander whose sensational 1976 rookie season earned him a singular place in Tigers history, died Monday in an apparent accident. He was 54.
Fidrych will forever be associated with the summer of '76, when his idiosyncratic ways helped to win over fans who might have otherwise paid little mind to a fifth-place team. He went 19-9 with a 2.34 ERA and threw 24 complete games and became a one-man phenomenon, the likes of which were not seen in Detroit's sporting history before or since.
