BAY MINETTE, Ala. — An outdoor billboard has injected international oil politics and questionable slang into rural south Alabama with an anti-Hugo Chavez message that pointedly urges motorists to boycott gas from CITGO, the oil firm with ties to Chavez's Venezuela.
The sign's message: "Don't buy gas from this ass!" has drawn a mixed reaction in Alabama and a protest from the oil firm.
Billboard owner John McCombs, 50, of Gulf Shores said, "I hope I haven't offended anyone..." adding that he objected to Chavez calling President Bush "the devil" and his outspoken hatred of America.
