Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada - They got the bum's rush when they were produced in 1987, but a batch of reject New Brunswick license plates that start with the prefix "ASS" are a collectors' item today.
Gary Doherty used to have hundreds of the plates, which sell on E-Bay for about $10. He's given most away or traded them.
Doherty has heard all the cracks, too. Like, the ASS-plates were turned down because a deputy minister said there were enough asses on New Brunswick highways already.
"Another one is, 'I'd like to know who got 999, because whoever it is that makes him the biggest ass in all of New Brunswick," he said.
The truth, at least as he's heard it, is that somebody in the N.B. government ordered plates starting with AAA and going to ASZ. The manufacturer - the Waldale Manufacturing plant in Amherst - followed the order to the T, or the S, in this case.
Doherty says at one point he had nearly 1,000 ASS-plates, but all but two are gone now - and he's not parting with those.
