'Unchained Melody' writer Hy Zaret dies

Read it HERE.

Hy Zaret was the pen name of William Stirrat; born in Cortland, NY. In 1936 - he was 16 years old - he wrote the lyrics for the now world-famous "Unchained Melody" about a girl in his neighborhood he fell in love with. In the same year he met the young Alex North, who was later to become a successful Hollywood composer, and convinced him to compose the music. The song was recorded 19 years later by Al Hibbler, who had been Duke Ellington's vocalist, for the 1955 movie UNCHAINED (1955); it was also used in GHOST (1990). Other pop songs include "Dedicated to You" (w. Sammy Cahn & Saul Chaplin), "My Sister and I," "So You're the One" and "No Other Arms, No Other Lips" (w. Alex Kramer & Joan Whitney), "One Meat Ball" (w. Louis C. Singer) and "There I Go" (w. Irving Weiser). His songs were used in WHAT'S COOKIN'? (1942), ALWAYS A BRIDESMAID (1943) and ABROAD WITH TWO YANKS (1944).
