Ryan O'Neal charged with assaulting son

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- Actor Ryan O'Neal was arrested over the weekend for allegedly assaulting his son, Griffin, in Malibu, police said Sunday.

After law enforcement officials and paramedics were called to the elder O'Neal's home shortly after midnight Friday, they learned that he had assaulted his son, said Lt. John Benedict, of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Ryan, 65, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon and negligent discharge of a firearm and released on $50,000 bond.

Neither of the men required medical treatment, he said.

Calls to the Oscar nominee's business manager and publicist were not returned.

Ryan O'Neal's film credits include "Love Story," "Paper Moon," "Green Ice" and "Barry Lyndon."

Griffin O'Neal, 42, is also an actor. His mother is O'Neal's first wife, Joanna Moore, and his sister is actress Tatum O'Neal.

Griffin O'Neal appeared in a number of B-movies, including "The Assault of the Killer Bimbos."

But the younger O'Neal's film career was overshadowed by a self-admitted battle with drug abuse and the 1986 Memorial Day boating death of Gian-Carlo Coppola, son of Francis Ford Coppola. Originally charged with manslaughter, Griffin O'Neal was found guilty of negligent boat operation, fined $200 and sentenced to 18 months probation.
